About the Role

We are seeking a highly ownership-driven Data Engineer to join a fast-growing startup building machine learning SaaS solutions for financial analysis, M&A advisory, and operational optimization.

In this role, you will be responsible for designing and maintaining the data infrastructure and integration layer that powers machine learning systems used by hedge funds, private equity firms, and large enterprise customers.

This is a high-impact position where you will work directly with the founder, owning data pipelines, integrations, and infrastructure that enable scalable machine learning workflows. You will operate in a fast-moving startup environment, solving real-world integration challenges across diverse and often complex customer systems.

Key Responsibilities

Data Pipelines & Integration

  • Design and implement automated data pipelines connecting to customer systems, including banking platforms, POS systems, APIs, and legacy databases
  • Build scalable ETL/ELT workflows to transform raw data into machine learning-ready formats
  • Integrate with diverse and often poorly documented backend systems
  • Implement data quality validation, monitoring, and sanity checks across customer datasets
  • Handle structured and unstructured data from multiple sources

Cloud Infrastructure & Backend Systems

  • Build and maintain scalable infrastructure on AWS (EC2, Fargate, RDS, Lambda, or similar services)
  • Develop backend services and integration layers using Python
  • Create standardized, reusable approaches for integrating with different industries and customer systems
  • Support frontend integrations using tools such as Retool or similar platforms
  • Ensure infrastructure reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency

Customer Integration & Collaboration

  • Work directly with the founder to design scalable technical solutions
  • Communicate with customers to understand their data environments and integration requirements
  • Translate business needs into robust, production-grade engineering solutions
  • Operate effectively in ambiguous environments with evolving requirements

Ownership & Startup Impact

  • Take full ownership of data infrastructure and integration systems
  • Help unblock machine learning development by ensuring reliable and scalable data pipelines
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, automation, and system reliability
  • Support rapid iteration and delivery in a fast-paced startup environment

Required Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Strong backend or data engineering experience in production environments
  • Proficiency with Python for backend development and data processing
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud infrastructure (EC2, Fargate, RDS, Lambda, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of ETL/ELT processes and data architecture
  • Experience integrating with APIs, databases, and external systems
  • Ability to work with legacy systems and non-standardized data environments

Engineering Mindset

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate complex, real-world technical challenges
  • Ability to work independently with high ownership and accountability
  • Comfort working in fast-moving startup environments with evolving priorities
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with financial systems, banking infrastructure, or fintech environments
  • Familiarity with POS systems, supply chain, or operational data systems
  • Experience supporting machine learning pipelines and data workflows
  • Exposure to event-driven architectures or streaming systems
  • Experience with cloud cost optimization strategies
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools or frontend integration platforms

Why You Should Work at Distillery

  • Work on high-impact systems that directly enable machine learning and business intelligence capabilities
  • Collaborate with talented engineers and founders solving meaningful technical challenges
  • Gain experience across backend engineering, data infrastructure, and cloud-native architectures
  • Grow your career in a culture that values ownership, learning, and technical excellence
  • Join a remote-first environment with flexibility, autonomy, and long-term growth opportunities
  • Be part of a company focused on building strong, lasting engineering partnerships
