About the Position

We are looking for a Head of Engineering to serve as the most senior technical leader on the team, owning both the stabilization of an existing production system and the definition of what gets built next. This role combines hands-on production engineering — Python/Django, AWS, and PostgreSQL — with the responsibility of shipping real AI-powered features into the product. You'll work closely with non-technical founders, moving fluidly between LLM pipelines, product direction, and production issues, in a fast-paced, un-modernized industry ripe for transformation.


Responsibilities

  • Define technical direction and lead engineering decisions as the most senior technical person on the team, not just executing tickets.
  • Design, build, and ship new product features, with a strong focus on integrating LLM-based capabilities (prompt design, structured output, evaluation) into production.
  • Own and stabilize the existing production system, keeping it running reliably while focusing primary attention on what's next.
  • Manage the full AWS infrastructure lifecycle — deployment, debugging, and cost management — without a dedicated DevOps team.
  • Design and maintain PostgreSQL schemas, and handle query performance tuning and migrations on live data.
  • Work independently, prioritizing ruthlessly and communicating clearly with non-technical founders.
  • Move across a wide range of work day to day — from LLM pipelines, to product direction, to production issues — as needed.

Requirements

  • 7+ years building and running production web applications, including meaningful time as a senior or lead engineer.
  • Production experience shipping LLM-based features — prompt design, structured output, evaluation — with a realistic sense of where models work and where they don't.
  • A builder's instinct, with the ability to define and lead technical direction rather than simply execute tickets.
  • Strong Python skills with deep, production-level Django experience.
  • Solid AWS experience, including infrastructure navigation, deployment, debugging, and cost management without a dedicated DevOps team.
  • Relational database fluency in PostgreSQL, including schema design, query performance tuning, and migrations on live data.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize ruthlessly, and communicate clearly with non-technical founders.
  • Comfort inheriting an existing production system and stabilizing it enough to build on top of.


Nice to Have

  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or other agentic tooling.
  • Background in search and catalog infrastructure at scale, including entity resolution, fuzzy product matching, and deduplication.
  • Modern JavaScript/TypeScript front-end experience (React / Next.js).
  • Mobile app development experience (iOS and Android).
  • Experience with async task processing (Celery or similar) and background job reliability.
  • Experience with payments and financial workflows (Stripe or equivalent), including the correctness and reconciliation demands that come with money.
  • Third-party API integration experience at volume (Google Workspace, CRM, logistics/tracking providers).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and error tracking tools (Sentry or equivalent) and a genuine instinct for operational hygiene.
  • Background in e-commerce, marketplace, B2B procurement, or supply chain domains.
  • Exposure to the construction or building products industry.
